City of Ogdensburg says no to state firearms law

The Ogdensburg City Council on Tuesday took a stand on the state’s newly-enacted Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act.

Get rid of it.

The city’s lawmakers voted 6-0 to urge state legislators to overturn the controversial state law.

Mayor William D. Nelson, Deputy Mayor and sponsor Michael D. Morley and councilors Daniel E. Skamperle, William D. Hosmer, Wayne L. Ashley and R. Storm Cilley all voted in favor of overturning. Councilor Jennifer Stevenson was absent.

The summary statement in Mr. Morley’s resolution said it all.

“A resolution protesting the passage and enforcement of the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE ACT) because it is an infringement on the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the States.”

Cattaraugus County lawmakers urge gun law repeal

Joining with other county governments across the state, members of the Cattaraugus County Legislature voted unanimously Wednesday to adopt a resolution urging the repeal of New York’s new gun control law.

The measure was presented by Legislator William Aiello of Olean after a recent meeting of the New York State Association of Counties, where he serves as second vice president. The meeting was a training involving members from Western New York and the Adirondacks. The regions banded together to pass a joint resolution calling for the appeal of the bill, Aiello said.

“We brought this bill back and decided to bring it forward as a show of support for what the New York Sheriffs Association, as well as the New York State Clerks Association, have said,” he explained. “The SAFE Act was pushed through and didn’t give anyone the chance to voice their opinion of it. It didn’t take into account law enforcement, among other things.”

Livingston County resolution opposing NY SAFE act.

6. CALLING FOR THE REPEAL OF THE NEW YORK SAFE ACT OF 2013

WHEREAS, the New York State Legislature recently enacted and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 (“NY SAFE ACT”); and

WHEREAS, the State of New York has a tradition and long history of conducting its deliberations and debates in the public view and that in the enactment of the NY SAFE ACT the New York State Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo acted in contradiction of this long, time honored tradition of an open government; and

WHEREAS, this legislation imposes far more burdensome regulations upon law abiding gun owners; notably;

1. The law’s definition of assault weapons is too broad, and prevents the possession of many weapons that are legitimately used for hunting, target shooting and self defense;

2. The law enacts reductions in the maximum capacity of gun magazines which unfairly limits the designcapabilities of guns purchased legally for over a century;

3. The law requires a five year recertification of pistol permits and registration of existing assault weapons which is an unfair impediment; and

WHEREAS, this legislation creates an environment in the state hostile to gun manufacturers and gun ownership; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Livingston County Board of Supervisors calls for the repeal of the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 (“NY SAFE ACT”); and, be it further

RESOLVED, that certified copies of this resolution be forwarded to Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senators Catharine M. Young and Patrick M. Gallivan and Assemblyman Bill Nojay, and the New York State Association of Counties. Dated at Geneseo, New York February 13, 2013 Ways and Means Committee

Rensselaer County legislators to reaffirm Second Amendment

The Rensselaer County Legislature is now another body challenging the New York SAFE Act.

At tonight’s monthly meeting, legislators will take up a resolution affirming support for the Second Amendment. Lawmakers behind it say the new law doesn’t do enough to address mental health, but goes too far when it comes to infringing on law-abiding citizens.
