Port Jervis passes resolution opposing NY SAFE act

The Common Council passed the resolution “supporting the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution” and opposing the New York SAFE Act, a gun control law hastily passed by the state Legislature.

In particular, the resolution contends that the new law would ban guns used for self-defense and recreation, and that Port Jervis citizens “derive economic benefit from all safe forms of firearms recreation, hunting, and shooting conducted in the areas surrounding and abutting the City while using all types of firearms allowable under the United States Constitution and the Constitution of the State of New York.”

Otsego County Democratic Committee registers disagreement with significant aspects of NY SAFE

In an extraordinary break with a new policy that has been ballyhooed by Cuomo, a wing of the governor’s own party — the Otsego County Democratic Committee — has registered its disagreement with significant aspects of the so-called assault weapon legislation.

A resolution adopted by the committee states that it is “not necessarily apparent that the prohibition of such firearms and magazines will, in fact, enhance pubic safety.” It also states that provisions requiring owners to register weapons that did not previously have to be registered also fails to enhance public safety.

Oswego County passes resolution calling for repeal of NY SAFE Act

The Oswego County Legislature voted 25-0 for a resolution urging the repeal of the NY SAFE Act, joining a growing list of counties that have denounced New York state’s controversial gun law.

“We were just standing up for our constituents,” Terry Wilbur, a legislator from Hannibal, said Thursday.

Wilbur, who sponsored the resolution, said he was pleased with the results, and that the resolution would send a clear message to state officials in Albany.

Oswego isn’t the first county in the area to come out against the SAFE Act. Madison and Herkimer counties have already passed similar resolutions.

Orleans County Legislature joins in opposition to state’s new gun law

The Orleans County Legislature joined a growing voice of upstate New York counties in opposing many of the provisions of the New York SAFE Act, a gun control measure that legislators say was rushed into passage by the state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Orleans body called on state legislators to hold public hearings on gun control violence, seeking “meaningful” solutions.

Several residents addressed the Legislature before the vote on Wednesday. Mike Donahue, president of the Orleans County Sportsmen’s Federation, urged the legislators to formally oppose the new state law. That was the message from residents Paul Rusin of Holley, Mattie Zarpentine of Holley, and Jim Flint of Ridgeway.

Town of Callicoon gun resolution draws pushback

Like other town boards across the state, the board of the Town of Callicoon considered and passed a resolution opposing the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 (SAFE Act) passed by the state legislature and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo in the wake of the killing of school children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

That sparked a sharp admonition from Dr. Ken Hilton, former superintendent of the Sullivan West School District, who said, “I’m shocked at the resolution you just approved. I’m speaking as a former member of the National Rifle Association, licensed by them as a rifle/shotgun instructor. Did you read the words of that resolution? You know that all constitutional rights have limitations. The First Amendment doesn’t allow you to go into a crowded theater and yell fire.”

Cattaraugus County lawmakers urge gun law repeal

Joining with other county governments across the state, members of the Cattaraugus County Legislature voted unanimously Wednesday to adopt a resolution urging the repeal of New York’s new gun control law.

The measure was presented by Legislator William Aiello of Olean after a recent meeting of the New York State Association of Counties, where he serves as second vice president. The meeting was a training involving members from Western New York and the Adirondacks. The regions banded together to pass a joint resolution calling for the appeal of the bill, Aiello said.

“We brought this bill back and decided to bring it forward as a show of support for what the New York Sheriffs Association, as well as the New York State Clerks Association, have said,” he explained. “The SAFE Act was pushed through and didn’t give anyone the chance to voice their opinion of it. It didn’t take into account law enforcement, among other things.”

The Rensselaer County Legislature is now another body challenging the New York SAFE Act.
