Warren County supervisors don’t like new gun law, nor way it was passed

Warren County supervisors didn’t plan to discuss New York’s recent gun law changes at their meeting Friday.

But a comment by one supervisor about the state’s method in changing the law, and how it differed from the procedures counties must follow to change laws, ended with a committee unanimously passing a resolution opposing both the law change and how the state made it.

Herkimer Co. Legislature opposes state’s new gun law

Last week, the state Legislature passed and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the act that was pushed through in light of recent tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and first responder shooting deaths in Webster on Christmas Eve.

The [Herkimer County] resolution asserts that the firearms act “fundamentally alters or abridges the right to keep and bear arms without addressing the problems of gun violence.”

Gun rights advocates overwhelm Ulster County Legislature session

Hundreds of Second Amendment supporters came out Tuesday night to the Ulster County Legislature meeting, to protest a resolution being considered by the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee. The proposal, which appears to have little support among legislators, sought to request Congress and the President to respond to December’s Sandy Hook shootings with unspecified legislation for further gun control.

So many members of the public attended, that the meeting room overflowed into the 6th floor corridor of the Ulster County Office Building in Kingston, filling the corridor tight with people from end to end. Fifty members of the public expressed their concerns during 2 ½ hours of public comment.

Deerpark board condemns NY’s new gun legislation

Stacy Case, her bright, yellow “Don’t Tread On Me” flag curled beside her, openly wept with happiness as Deerpark Councilman David Dean read a resolution condemning New York’s newly passed gun legislation and expressing support for the Constitution’s Second Amendment — the one focusing on the right to bear arms.

The Deerpark Town Board meeting Tuesday night began with a solemn but nonobligatory prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. But it drew to a close with the board unanimously voting against the state’s new NY-SAFE gun legislation Tuesday night and a standing ovation from a crowd of about 30. “This is for the future, this is for my children, your children,” said Dean, who helped put together the resolution.

Schuyler County sheriff statement on NY SAFE act

I have heard from many people over the past few days regarding New York’s new gun law. I want to assure every resident of Schuyler County, that neither myself, nor any Deputy Sheriff from the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office will be coming to take your firearms from you. I believe in our rights under the Second Amendment, and the protections or our citizens under the Fourth Amendment. I do support portions of the new law such as penalties for killing our First Responders, and protecting our schools. This law was rushed through the State Legislature, without the time period needed for rebuttle and discussion by both sides of the issue. I hope that the way that this law was presented and passed, isn’t the new “norm” in Albany. I want to thank our local representatives Senator Tom O’Mara and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano for voting “No” and protecting our rights.

Thank you. – Sheriff Bill Yessman

News Mid-Hudson police officials say more restrictive gun, ammo laws won’t solve problem

The current debate about gun control is emotional, both locally and nationwide, but some area law-enforcement personnel say laws already in place are adequate.

They argue that law-abiding citizens are not the problem and that a person who wants to commit a crime will find a way to do so regardless of laws.

Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum said the state already has laws prohibiting individuals from possessing fully automatic rifles, along with limitations on high-capacity magazines for ammunition. He said he does not believe there needs to be any change to current gun-control laws because it’s not the honest people who commit crimes.
